THE PRESENT SIMPLE TENSE (1ST FORM OF THE VERB)\u00a0Is used to express:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. Habitual actions<\/strong> (+often, usually, never, every day, in the morning, on Sundays) ex:\u00a0My mother usually<\/em> goes <\/u>to the market place on Sunday mornings.<\/li>\n
  2. General truths or characteristics. \u00a0<\/strong>ex:\u00a0The Earth moves<\/u> round the Sun.<\/li>\n
  3. Momentary actions, completed almost at the same time they are performed<\/strong> (demonstrations, ceremonies, TV commentaries, announcements, headlines) ex: Bill gets out<\/u> of bed,comes<\/u> downstage a bit, and stands<\/u> attentively.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n\n

      PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE<\/strong> (TO BE + VB + ING)\u00a0Is used to express:<\/strong><\/p>\n

      1. An action happening at the moment of speaking<\/strong> (the action has duration and it is not completed) ex:\u00a0I am not wearing<\/u> a coat as it isn\u2019t cold.<\/li>\n
      2. An action that extends over a (slightly) longer period of time<\/strong>, including the time of speaking. ex:\u00a0I am reading<\/u> a novel by John Fowels.<\/li>\n
      3. A temporary limited action<\/strong> (+an adverbial indicating present time). ex: I live in Bra\u0219ov but I\u2019m living<\/u> in Bucharest this year.\/\/ Why are you being rude?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          THE PRESENT PERFECT (HAVE\/HAS + V3-past participle) IS USED TO DESCRIBE<\/p>\n

          • An action or situation that started in the past and continues in the present. I have lived<\/strong> in Bucharest since 1992\u00a0<\/em>(= and I still do.)<\/li>\n
          • An action performed during a period that has not yet finished. She\u00a0has been\u00a0<\/strong>to the cinema twice this week <\/em>(= and the week isn’t over yet.)<\/li>\n
          • A repeated action in an unspecified period between the past and now. We have visited<\/strong> Portugal several times.<\/em><\/li>\n
          • An action that was completed in the very recent past, expressed by ‘just’. I have just finished<\/strong> my work.<\/em><\/li>\n
          • An action when the time is not important. He has read<\/strong> ‘War and Peace’. <\/em>(= the result of his reading is important)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            Important note:<\/strong> When we want to give or ask details about when, where, who, we use the simple past.<\/p>\n
